Today, the diversification of rural resources has positioned tourism as a key driver of rural development. In this context, the development of rural tourism increasingly depends on value creation and the growth of diverse local enterprises. This study aimed to identify key areas of value creation within the context of rural tourism. Methodologically, the study employed a qualitative approach based on a case study design. The research was conducted in the village of Orazan, a rural tourism destination located in Taleghan County, Alborz Province, Iran. A purposive sample of 10 local residents was selected for in-depth interviews. The findings revealed multiple areas of value creation, including: the creative utilization of local assets and tools; delivery of quality services and products to tourists; application of digital communication technologies to promote the village; support for local entrepreneurial initiatives; accurate representation of the destination’s image; improved interactions with tourists; enhanced tourist satisfaction; strategic advertising efforts; online marketing and sales; the establishment of start-ups; incorporation of domestic and international experiences; organization and promotion of local events; investment in local infrastructure; effective mobilization of local knowledge and skills; and the development of innovative products. The study concludes that sustainable value creation in rural tourism requires both the development of core infrastructure and the integration of digital technologies and entrepreneurial innovation. Moreover, recognizing and leveraging the diversity of rural resources plays a crucial role in fostering value creation.
Extended Abstract
Introduction
Rural tourism development is pivotal to integrating cultural heritage with the tourism sector and catalyzing village revitalization. It further serves as an effective mechanism for fostering shared prosperity. A rural tourism destination comprises extensive landscapes dominated by natural, forested, and cultivated environments. Within such settings, distinctive natural, economic, and socio-cultural traits, including traditions, local cooperation, trust, and reciprocity, coexist harmoniously, rendering the destination a single, small-scale tourism product that is nature-compatible, imbued with local distinctiveness, and ultimately sustainable. Within tourism destinations, value is embedded in services and products and can be exchanged to generate benefits for visitors. Yet value creation is increasingly viewed as a co-creative process that unfolds between service providers and tourists. Accordingly, this study addresses the following research question: Which domains underpin value creation in rural tourism destinations?
Methodology
This research adopted a qualitative case-study design. In line with case-study logic, the village of Orazan was purposively selected as the bounded field site. Participants comprised local residents of Orazan (Taleghan County, Alborz Province, Iran) who provide catering services or tourism-related products to visitors. Sample size was determined through theoretical saturation, which was reached after ten semi-structured, face-to-face interviews conducted during an extended period of immersive fieldwork. The lead researcher spent considerable time in the village, cultivating rapport and observing daily practices. These interviews elicited participants’ lived experiences, attitudes, observations, and emotions in line with the study objectives. Interview transcripts were analyzed using iterative open and axial coding procedures.
Orazan lies 12 km north of Taleghan and is renowned for its perennial springs and scenic waterfalls. Locally called Āb-Rīzān, the village is also the birthplace of eminent Iranian author Jalal Al-e-Ahmad. Ample water resources support extensive walnut orchards, making walnut purchasing a popular tourist activity. The village’s reputation chiefly stems from a cluster of celebrated cascades, Hayad, Khoskeh-Chal, Sorkh-Band, Vari-Yad, and Siah-Band-Ja, among the most notable waterfalls in the Taleghan region.
Results and Discussion
Analysis yielded 85 open codes and 15 axial codes that collectively constitute the core categories of value creation in rural tourism destinations. These codes converged into 15 thematic domains that facilitate value creation in the Orazan rural-tourism context: (1) creative utilization of local facilities and tools; (2) delivery of high-quality services and products; (3) deployment of digital communication technologies to promote the village; (4) support for local entrepreneurial initiatives; (5) accurate destination imagery; (6) enhanced tourist–host communication; (7) tourist satisfaction management; (8) strategic advertising; (9) online marketing and e-commerce; (10) establishment of start-ups; (11) integration of domestic and international know-how; (12) organization and promotion of local events; (13) investment in local infrastructure; (14) mobilization of residents’ skills and knowledge; and (15) development of innovative products.
Conclusion
Amid accelerating technological and socio-economic change, tourism destinations demonstrate substantial adaptive capacity, and today’s travellers increasingly seek distinctive, memorable experiences in rural settings. Concentrating on core value-creation domains secures competitive advantage, deepens visitor satisfaction and loyalty, and drives innovation in tourism offerings. In Orazan, these domains encompass the creative mobilisation of local assets, the provision of high-quality services and products, and the incubation of new tourism enterprises. Although the village is endowed with rich natural and human resources, converting these assets into innovative visitor experiences depends on harnessing residents’ creativity, an approach that yields tangible, novel tourism products. Moreover, effective value creation presupposes that prospective visitors can readily envisage their engagement with destination offerings; without such imagery, their motivation to visit or extend their stay diminishes. Digitalisation is therefore pivotal for showcasing rural destinations’ capacities and projecting multi-faceted brand images to wider audiences.
